There are changes in the Sunday afternoon rehearsal schedule thru the middle of October. Please see the descriptions below as changes are made.
We are in need of adult volunteers to help out during children's music activities. According to the Safe Sanctuary policy, we must have two adults present in order for these activities to take place. Please consider volunteering your time so that our children continue to benfit from the music opportunites available.
St. Matthew UMC is a sponsoring church for the Greenville Chorale. Please visit their website for more information as they celebrate their 50th anniversary season. Greenville Chorale
Opportunities in Music Ministries: Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth! Music is a powerful part of worship, and the music at St. Matthew has expanded opportunities to become involved. We provide involvement for a wide range of ages and abilities. Check us out. We may have just the musical group for you! Descriptions of Ensembles and Classes: Chancel Choir : This choir is primarily adult age, though sometimes the Junior Choir will sing with them in special service music. Chancel Choir sings every 11AM service and is a vital part of the worship in music. We present special music for the Holy days of Advent, Christmas Eve and Christmas, and Maundy Thursday and Easter. While we have been growing, we always welcome new members, especially tenors and basses. Orchestra: We are looking for an alternate time/day,with a strong possibility of Saturday afternoon. This ensemble is designed for adult and youth to play side by side. Currently, we prepare music for congregational hymns for Sunday mornings. We are a new group, and usually play twice a month. As our skills and repertoire expand, we hope to build up to playing in every 11AM service. This is a great opportunity for adults to relearn an instrument they used to play. For all, it is a safe environment to improve playing skills, but most importantly, to be part of the worship experience. Youth Praise Band We are combining Praise Band with Youth Choir until mid-October, to prepare music for September and October. Time is 5:30-6:00 on Sundays. This ensemble is open to youth who sing, who know how to play an instrument, or who have access to an instrument and would like to learn to play. We study chords and chord progressions, and learn contemporary songs appropriate for worship. We have a curriculum we've just purchased for individual instruments/vocals. We're still looking for a bass player. Youth Choir: 5:30-6:00 Sundays. We are preparing music for September and October. Be There! Great music planned ! This ensemble is open to MYF -age youth who may not feel comfortable singing solo. The choir will sing in differing styles, and sing in two-part and three-part harmony. There will be opportunites to interact with other youth choirs around the state. Music for Children at St. Matthew : Startup Wednesday September 8. Childrens' choirs at St. Matthew are designed as both choir and class. Children are taught songs and musical skills using elements of both Kodaly and Orff methodologies. At this time, we have two ensemble classes scheduled on Wednesdays: Children's Choir is open to ages 3-7, and Junior Choir is open to ages 8-11. Children will sing in the 11 AM services once a quarter. Handbells:Startup is August 25. Handbells is open to anyone who can read music or would like to learn. Ringers play from one to four bells, depending on their skill and comfort level. Handbellls play in both special services and will supplement service music in small ensembles.
